How Gift Budget Planner works

The Gift Budget Planner totals planned gift outlays across three recipient tiers, adds per-recipient wrapping supplies and flat shipping costs, and compares the grand total against your spending cap.

Total Planned Spend = Σ(Group Count × Group Avg) + (Total Recipients × Wrapping) + Shipping; Remaining Balance = Total Budget − Total Planned Spend.

The calculator also computes your blended average cost per recipient and the maximum affordable average gift price to stay within budget.

How to interpret the Gift Budget Planner output

Use the Remaining / Over Budget card and the Max Overall Avg / Person metric to rebalance your list.

If the primary result exceeds your Total Budget, check the Wrapping & Shipping Total first. Consolidating shipments with free retailer delivery or reusing gift bags often recovers $30 to $60 without reducing the gifts your recipients receive.

Gift Budget Planner: common questions

Answers about using Gift Budget Planner and understanding its results.

Why should a gift budget separate recipients into tiers?

Dividing recipients into close family, friends, and coworkers/hosts lets you adjust spending on one tier without cutting gifts for immediate family when your total planned cost exceeds your target budget.

How much do wrapping paper, gift bags, and shipping add to holiday spending?

Greeting cards, tissue paper, gift bags, and parcel postage frequently add 8% to 15% on top of item prices. Including them upfront prevents last-minute credit card overruns in December.

What does 'Max Overall Avg / Person' in the result mean?

It subtracts your wrapping and shipping costs from your total budget and divides the remaining gift pool by your total recipient count, showing the highest overall average gift price that keeps you on budget.

Can I export my gift budget plan to a text file?

Yes. Every calculation runs locally in your browser with zero server uploads. Click Copy result or Download result.txt to save your tier totals and remaining balance.
