How the Test Score & Grade Percentage Calculator Works

Enter the total question count, the number of missed questions, and the point weight per question to compute both percentage score and raw point totals.

Correct Questions = Total - Wrong. Percentage Score = ((Total - Wrong) / Total) x 100%. Earned Points = (Total - Wrong) x Points per Question, out of Maximum Points = Total x Points per Question.

All questions are weighted equally. Wrong questions must be a whole number between 0 and Total questions, and outputs display up to 12 significant digits.

How to Score a Test or Quiz Step by Step

Set the quiz length, enter the missed count, and specify how many points each question carries.

Enter the total number of questions

Type the total number of equally weighted items on the exam or worksheet (for example, 20, 35, or 75 questions).

Enter the number of wrong answers

Enter how many questions were marked wrong. If you already know the number of correct answers instead, subtract correct from total to get the wrong count.

Worked Test Scoring Examples

Compare standard classroom quizzes, custom point weights, and target passing score checks.

20-question quiz with 3 wrong (5 points each)

With 20 total questions and 3 wrong, you have 17 correct answers. That equals (17 / 20) x 100 = 85% and 17 x 5 = 85 points out of 100.

35-question exam with 4 wrong (1 point each)

Missing 4 out of 35 leaves 31 correct answers. The percentage score is (31 / 35) x 100 = 88.5714%, with each question worth 2.8571% of the grade.

Finding how many you can miss for an 80% score

On a 25-question test, each question is worth 4%. Missing 5 questions leaves 20/25 = 80%, so 5 is the maximum wrong count that still holds an 80% threshold.

How to Interpret Percentage and Point Results

Understand how question weight affects raw points versus percentage score.

The result is the correct count, points and percentage. Calculate an equally weighted test result from question counts.

All questions use one point value; partial credit and grading scales are not inferred.

Numerical output shows up to 12 significant digits. Floating-point arithmetic and display rounding can affect the last digits.

Example input
Total questions = 20; Wrong questions = 3; Points per equally weighted question = 5
Example output
Correct answers: 17 Earned points: 85 Possible points: 100 Score percentage: 85%

Assumptions, Partial Credit, and Scope Limits

Check how equally weighted scoring differs from multi-part or partial-credit exams.

This calculator assumes every question carries the exact same point value. Total questions and wrong questions must be whole numbers, and wrong answers cannot exceed total questions.

If your test includes half-point deductions (such as 0.5 wrong on a short-answer item) on an otherwise equally weighted test, multiply both Total questions and Wrong questions by 2 so both inputs are whole numbers.

Test Score Calculator: Frequently Asked Questions

Answers about using Test Score Calculator and understanding its results.

How do I calculate my test score percentage from wrong answers?

Subtract the number of wrong questions from the total number of questions to get your correct count, divide by the total number of questions, and multiply by 100. For example, 3 wrong on a 20-question test is (20 - 3) / 20 x 100 = 85%.

How much is each question worth on a test?

Divide 100% by the total number of questions. On a 20-question test, each question is worth 5%. On a 25-question test, each is worth 4%. On a 40-question test, each is worth 2.5%.

Does changing Points per question change the percentage?

No. When every question has the same weight, the point value cancels out in the ratio. Setting 5 points per question on a 20-question test changes the raw score to 85/100 points while keeping the percentage at 85%.

What if I know how many questions I got right instead of wrong?

Subtract your correct answers from the total question count and enter that difference in the Wrong questions field.
