Laundry Cost Calculator
Estimate per-load and annual laundry cost from supplied use and prices.
Open toolEnter your household size, weekly laundry weight per person, washer drum capacity, water per cycle, and per-load supply and utility costs below to estimate weekly and annual wash loads.
Enter the inputs, then select Calculate loads.

The Laundry Load Calculator multiplies household members by weekly fabric weight, divides by usable washer capacity, rounds up to whole wash cycles, and totals water, washer runtime, and annual operating cost.
Weekly Loads = ceil((People × Weekly_lb) ÷ Capacity_lb); Annual Loads = Weekly Loads × 52; Annual Water = Annual Loads × Gallons_per_load.
Per-load cost adds detergent/supply cost and water/energy cost together, then multiplies by both weekly cycles and 52 weeks per year.
Review the input parameters, allowed value ranges, and worked reference cases for the Laundry Load Calculator below before running your calculation.
| Parameter / Scenario | Default / Sample Value | Rule or Allowed Range | Output / Usage Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Input: Household members | 4 | Range: 1 to 50 | Required workspace parameter |
| Input: Laundry per person per week | 12 | Range: 1 to 100 | Required workspace parameter |
| Input: Usable washer load capacity | 15 | Range: 2 to 60 | Required workspace parameter |
| Input: Detergent & supplies cost per load | 0.28 | Range: 0 to 20 | Required workspace parameter |
| Worked Case 1: Baseline run (4 people, 12 lb/week, 15 lb HE washer) | Preloaded / test values | Weekly Laundry (lb) = People × lb/person/week; Rounded Weekly Loads = ceil(Weekly Laundry ÷ Washer Capacity); Annual Cost = Weekly Loads × 52 × (Detergent Cost + Energy/Water Cost) | Four people generate 48 lb of laundry per week, which equals 3.2 exact loads or 4 rounded loads per week (208 loads/year). At $0.93/load and 19 gal/cycle, laundry uses 76 gal/week (3,952 gal/year) and costs $193.44/year. |
| Worked Case 2: Compact apartment washer (2 people, 12 lb/week, 9 lb drum) | Preloaded / test values | Weekly Laundry (lb) = People × lb/person/week; Rounded Weekly Loads = ceil(Weekly Laundry ÷ Washer Capacity); Annual Cost = Weekly Loads × 52 × (Detergent Cost + Energy/Water Cost) | Two people produce 24 lb/week, requiring 3 loads/week (156 loads/year) in a 9 lb compact drum. At 13 gal/load and $0.80/load, annual water use is 2,028 gallons and annual cost is $124.80. |

Compare a four-person family using a standard HE washer against a two-person apartment using a compact machine.
Four people generate 48 lb of laundry per week, which equals 3.2 exact loads or 4 rounded loads per week (208 loads/year). At $0.93/load and 19 gal/cycle, laundry uses 76 gal/week (3,952 gal/year) and costs $193.44/year.
Two people produce 24 lb/week, requiring 3 loads/week (156 loads/year) in a 9 lb compact drum. At 13 gal/load and $0.80/load, annual water use is 2,028 gallons and annual cost is $124.80.
If you wash delicates, gym gear, or whites in separate half-full loads, reduce the usable washer capacity input to your average actual load weight (for example, 10 lb instead of 15 lb) for a realistic cycle count.
Review the gap between exact weight-based loads and rounded weekly cycles alongside annual water and cost figures.
When exact loads are just above a whole number (such as 3.15 loads), consolidating full loads or waiting an extra day before washing bedding can eliminate 52 wash cycles per year. The annual cost and water breakdown also shows how quickly switching to cold-water wash cycles or bulk detergent lowers yearly utility spend.
Check drum capacity ratings and dryer assumptions before comparing appliance upgrades.
Washer manufacturers advertise drum volume in cubic feet rather than pounds. As a rule of thumb, multiply cubic feet by 3.5 to find comfortable dry-fabric pounds for everyday mixed loads. Annual projections assume 52 uniform weeks per year.

An average adult generates 10 to 14 pounds of dry laundry per week, including everyday clothing, bath towels, and weekly bed sheet changes. Athletes and young children often add 3 to 5 pounds per week.
A compact washer holds 8 to 10 lb of dry laundry, a standard 4.0 to 4.5 cu ft high-efficiency washer holds 14 to 16 lb comfortably, and a large-capacity 5.0+ cu ft drum holds 18 to 20 lb without overloading.
Exact loads divide total weekly fabric weight by drum capacity, while rounded weekly loads use ceiling rounding because any leftover laundry requires an additional wash cycle.
